Why You Need A Professional Headshot

A professional headshot is a vital component to your professional life. Say goodbye to your selfie stick and hello to a photographer in your area. Our Director of Marketing previously had a headshot that was taken by her little brother on her iPhone in the hallway at their house. Once she joined the Starloft team, she had her first professional headshot taken and the difference is outstanding.

Left: headshot taken on an iPhone with overhead lighting in a hallway at home. Right: professional headshot taken in the Starloft Photo & Video studio with proper editing.

Comparing the two photos, it’s safe to say that nothing can compete with a professional photograph. With the proper lighting, editing, camera, and equipment, you’re in good hands. The SmartPhone photo on the left appears grainy compared to the professional photo on the right, and there has been no editing done to take away from the shine of the flash on her face.

A professional photo of yourself to display on LinkedIn (and elsewhere) is beneficial in showing people what you look like. It’s nice to put a face to a name and makes you far more personable. Any time you make any drastic changes to your appearance, it’s time for a new headshot. If you meet with a potential employer and they don’t recognize you from your photo, that is a problem. It’s almost like you lied without intentionally doing so. Keep your headshot recent and updated.

Your headshot makes an instant first impression. It’s up to you what that will be. Your headshot is your business card of the web. Present yourself as professional, above all else. Each of us has different wants for our headshots. Some want to look approachable, strong, or confident. Some people just want a genuine smile. We work with you to do what we can to capture you in the way you’d like.

Headshots show the world that you are investing in your own personal brand. You care about your professional self. Your career is something you take seriously. You have taken the time to acquire something not everyone has. Call us today to schedule your own headshot session.

Why Your Delivered Images Come In Different Sizes

After your shoot with us, you’ll receive an email with a link to download your edited images. You’ll notice that the photos will be cropped and sized differently and you may wonder why. The answer: we do this to make your life easier (I know, can you believe it?!). Different social media platforms request varying dimensions for photos so we work to make sure you have what you need. We shoot our headshot and portrait photos landscape style because this ensures the subject will be completely in the photo and won’t have cut-off shoulders. From there, we deliver the landscape version along with a cropped vertical version and a square. Depending on which platform you’re using your photo on, we can resize it accordingly. You’ll be given three versions of each photo. We can also do custom sizing if you know the dimensions. If you would like us to extract you from your photo and edit you onto another photo, we can do this for an additional fee. Realtors like extracting themselves from their headshot and being placed in front of a house. Take a look at Rick Tabor’s headshots below to see what we’re talking about!

What To Expect For Your Headshot Session

When preparing for your headshot session, here are some things to keep in mind:

Most importantly, this session is all about you and your needs. The session will be as long or as short as you need to be satisfied with your experience. Although, the majority of sessions are under thirty minutes. You have the option to come to our studio or we can meet you on location for an additional fee.

We recommend getting to the studio ten to fifteen minutes early in case you need to change into your outfit, touch up your make-up, fix your hair, or anything else to make yourself camera ready. We have a changing area and mirrors for your convenience. If you bring multiple outfits, you’ll be able to comfortably change here.

We recommend bringing more than one outfit so you have more options to choose from. Neutrals and darker tones look best and most professional. Steer away from distracting patterns, heavy make-up, and gaudy jewelry.

We will start the session by taking some shots in each of your outfits. Then we will upload them to the computer right then and there, and take a look. You’ll be able to hand pick your favorite photo to be retouched. You also have the option of purchasing additional images – sometimes one just isn’t enough!

Our studio has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Your only job is to sit up straight and smile! We’ll take care of the rest.
